“A colosseum”

A Minecraft colosseum in 6,197 blocks, 49 by 41 and 22 tall, built as the ruin in Rome stands today: three storeys of arches, an attic, and cells showing through a half-missing arena floor. It was generated on this site from the two words above, for Java Edition 1.21, and is not the potato Colosseum of the 2024 April Fools snapshot (24w14potato).

Next to the one in Rome

The Colosseum in Rome lost the south side of its outer wall to an earthquake in 1349, and little of its arena floor is left. This build has both marks. Its wall is whole along one long side and falls to eight layers on the other, and the floor covers the cells on one half only.

The plan is close to scale: at one block to about 3.8 m, 189 by 156 m comes to 49 by 41 blocks, and the arena takes about the same share of it as the real one. The wall is another matter. It would be 12 or 13 layers at that scale and it is 21. Our guess is the arches: each is two blocks wide and two high, and anything smaller stops looking like one.

The arena floor, from the top

The Minecraft colosseum seen from straight above: an oval of sandstone seats round an arena floored on one half
The floored half of the arena is on the right, the open cells on the left. The red box with two gold blocks sits on the long side where the wall still stands; in Rome the emperor had the box at the north end, the side that survives there too.

Fights on the sand

Treat it as a duel pit. The arena is 21 by 15, and the PvP maps players pass around tend to start near 50 across, so this is one against one.

The colosseum cut off at layer 3: a ring of sandstone round a grid of dark cell walls under the arena
  • Nobody jumps out

A block of wall with a fence on it rings the arena. That is two and a half blocks, and a player clears a little over one.

  • Two levels to fight on

Half the floor is missing. From the sand it is one block down onto the tops of the cell walls and three down into the passages between them, a fall that costs no health. For one flat floor, lay 106 blocks of sandstone across the gap at layer 4. The cells stay underneath.

  • What fits in the cells

They are two blocks high. A zombie is 1.95 tall and fits; an iron golem (2.7) and an enderman (2.9) do not. Two passages are already closed with dark oak under iron bars. How mobs find their way through the rest we have not tested.

Statues, an awning and an arch

  • Statues in the arches

In Rome the arches of the second and third storeys each framed a statue. Here those openings are two wide and two high, and an armour stand is 1.975 tall.

  • The awning

The masts held a canvas awning over the seats. Carpet or wool run inward from the 23 fence posts would do it. Leave the middle open.

  • A gladiator for the middle

Sixteen blocks tall puts its head just under the top of the wall.

  • An arch on the way in

A triumphal arch stands beside the Colosseum in Rome. At 25 blocks wide, one here would be about half as wide as this build.
